The Rook - Started as a story in Eerie comics but was eventually published under its own title by Warren publishing.

Growing up I was not greatly into comic books but there was a short period were I was. I do have an appreciation for them as an eclectic art form. I recently ran across a guy, totally by accident, who was selling Eerie comics on ebay. There was one story in particular that I enjoyed. It was about a scientist (Restin Dane, also know as the Rook) who was supposed to be, I believe, the great grandson of the mysterious time traveler from HG Wells time machine. He travels back in time (in his time Castle) and rescues his great great great grandfather Bishop Dane from being killed at the Alamo. Bishop is an ornery old coot that usually ends most arguments with his six shooter. Restin pairs his mild mannered mechanical man servant (named manners) up with Bishop to keep him out of trouble. That, of course, doesn't work very well so while Restin is out exploring space and time the old man and manners are in a second time castle getting into trouble. As you've probably noticed most of the characters are named after chess pieces with the exception of manners and Restins other two robots named Nuts and Bolts. I have posted some of the comics pages here in case you are curious. It seems as I read them now that my imagination added more to the story than was actually there. The writing is not quite as good as I remembered it being. It is still a great concept and fun to read.

Note: If you are mainly interested in just reading one story to get the feel of it then I would recommend Eerie 89 Trouble in the time factory. It is short and a decent stand alone story.

Many of the cover images have an advertisement overlaid on them. I didn't mind as I was just glad to get the images. They actually advertise the company I purchased some of these magazines from.
