- Language:
- Language is
painstakingly defined and organized by rules of use to make it an
effective means of communication but
because it is practiced universally it gets subjected to a lot of
abuse. Often words that have a specific meaning get used as a label for
something different and end up losing thier original meaning. While you
can argue that it is a natural process it complicates accurately
conveying specific ideas. It is impossible to be concise and succint
when you have to elaborate on the meaning of terms used in an
explanation.
Love
This most important of words has become
terribly over used. You can say you love pizza or love a song or love
Fridays but that is really just liking something. While you can argue
that you can tell what is meant by inflection wouldn't it be better to
have a word that just represents the depth and breadth of loving
your children or parents, spouse, boy/girl friend, friends or even your
community or country? A word that represents more than a passing feeling
but translates into a commitment of mind, body and soul.
Hate
*coming soon.
Illegal War
It is almost but not quite an oxymoron.
Since there is no governing body that supercedes the autonomous
authority of any national government or multiple of national governments, whether you
agree with the rational for going to war or not, the term legal or
illegal simply does not apply.
Grow
Ok, so maybe I'm being a little uptight
about this one but every time I hear a politician or commentator say
"We need to grow this or that" it makes me wince. You could argue
that it is not
altogether wrong but it is such a juvenile term and is so
non-specific it doesn't define what the actual goals are.
Tolerance
While in general tolerance is a very
good thing it has also become one of the most abused words in the
English language. It's a nicer way of saying "to put up with." Taken to
the extreme it means apathy; To look the other way, not get involved,
fail to stand up to, and fail to protect. It's a favorite term of
people who want to get their way regardless of the negative impact on
themselves or others.
Discriminate
It has become a bad thing
to discriminate. It's the effect of narrowing the defnition of the
term to refer to a specific set of circumstances. Correctly used the
term discriminate means the discerment of qualities and
differences between things and to use that information to make
judgements and decisions. It is an important life skill and to
supress it in our thought processes is to intentionally reduce our
ability to think. Great effort should be directed towards
discriminating based on good criteria. Thats the essence of critical
thinking. For example lets examine the
words of Dr Martian Luther King jr who said "judge me not on the color
of my skin but on the content of my character." He did not say don't
judge me. He said judge me based on useful criteria. People
commonly mistake the bible as saying don't judge when it really directs
you to not judge unjustly saying essentially the same thing as MLK.
This is not limited to being discriminating towards people. It is
important to be discriminating in almost every facet of your life.
Choosing the right books to read, food to eat, church to attend,
politicians to support, art to appreciate, music to listen too, clothes
to wear, people to hire...etc. There is no good or viable rational for
not engaging your intelligence when making choices.
