It seems apparent to me from researching these quotes from brilliant, successful, and respected persons there is a common thread that runs through thier thinking. That is a belief in virtues as guiding principles for conducting themselves. These virtues may have a variety of sources, upbringing, religion, role models, life lessons learned. I think this is not a coincidence. It's a belief that one can, and should, rise above the mean.
