Mountain Top Mining
Mountain Top Mining is the practice of strip mining mountain tops for
coal. It is safer and cheaper than traditional methods of mining and is
used in mountainous areas that are not heavily populated. The problem
is the enormous amount of damage to the landscape and the environment.
While the practice is regulated and has to meet standards of
reclamaition it is not nearly good enough. The Appalachians are a
beautful national treasure that must be preserved. It is one of the
most naturally beautiful places on earth. The loss of the natural
Appalachian landscape is just too great a loss to bare. [

Republicans for environmental protection
Senator McCain has promised to end the destructive practice of mountaintop
removal coal mining, which is destroying the Appalachian landscape and has
resulted in thousands of miles of streams being buried by the overburden.
Mountaintop removal is the worst kind of mining. In addition to obliterating
mountaintops and burying streams, the practice is bad for jobs because it
requires significantly less manpower than traditional mining.
