Statue of Liberty

Like a sibling at times we can become angry at the French. People will say "don't they remember our sacrifice on their shores during WWII?" While this point is true we must never forget the French contribution to our war for independence. Many French soldiers lost their lives on our shores. Beyond that sacrifice the French gave us the great gift of the Statue of Liberty. Regardless of what arguements we may at whiles hold against one another over the course of time, may we never forget the kinship and history we share.

This poem by Emma Lazarus is engraved at the base of the pedistal.

The New Colossus

Yes, Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
